8 Things You Don’t Know About Me

Eight Ball

I’ve only been blogging seriously for a couple of months, so it shouldn’t be too hard for me to find eight things that you lot don’t know about me, right? Well, that’s what I have to do - thanks to the Princess of Press (a.k.a. Lisa Sabin-Wilson) tagging me!

She was tagged by her friend Chelle (who should win an award for the best blog header ever), who was tagged by Venomous Kate (who’s on an enviable mission to “point out and humiliate idiots at every opportunity” - something I’d like to do professionally one day).

So here they are then! Eight things you (probably) don’t (want) to know about me…

1. I’m a musician and producer. I haven’t written or produced anything since 2002, which was when my first daughter was born - but I certainly plan to get back into it in the future! I was doing quite well back then, with my tunes appearing on national magazine demo CDs among other things. You probably won’t want to check out my White Roots site if you don’t like commercial Rap music or modern R&B!

2. I only passed my driving test two years ago, at the ripe old age of 28. This wasn’t because I didn’t want to drive (I got my provisional licence two weeks after my 17th birthday), but rather that I had no need to (being an unsociable geek from 17 to 21, then living and working in London, and then marrying a taxi service my wife. When I finally decided to go for it I failed two tests and took 47 lessons (at around 20 pounds a lesson) before I passed!

3. I’ve only ever owned two cars (see above). My first car was a little green Proton Compact Persona - it lost a fight with a metal post. My current car is a bright red 1992 BMW 520i SE (the same model as on this Bentley Manual) - it won a fight with a big yellow skip, but it “needs some work” according to my mechanic. I’m looking for a new car to smash up buy at the moment…

4. I have a weird memory. I can remember full phone numbers (including dialling codes) of people I haven’t seen or spoken to for ten years - but I have problems recalling whether I turned the oven off.

5. I have read each the five titles in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams about 200 times. However, I don’t like either the original or the new radio episodes, the TV series or the film.

6. I love good quality chocolate. We’re not talking about the Cadbury or Nestle crap, but the real stuff. If it’s got more than 70 percent cocoa then I’m probably interested! Should I ever win the National Lottery then I intend to buy one of everything (or possibly the whole company) from these guys

7. I believe in love at first site. I originally met Abi in a nightclub, where I’d spent all evening chatting-up one of her friends. We met again a little while later, then spent a couple of weeks sending each other text messages. Eight months later we were married - and five months after that (ignore the maths) my first daughter was born.

8. If somebody had told me six years ago that I would have a wife and three children by the time I was 30, I would have laughed at them - my priorities back then were getting drunk as often as I could, DJing when I was reasonably sober, and generally partying quite hard… But now, just six years later, nothing in the world means more to me than my family.

Right… My favourite bit - slapping other people with the tag! I’m gonna get Tara (when she’s back from her holiday), David Airey, Charity, Vivien and Randa. You’re it! :)

[thanks to Lisa, Zep, David Airey, Tess, Char, LaurenMarie, Tara, Aaron, Randa, Sarp and Doug for their comments on my (surprisingly successful) previous post]

You’ll want to give Lisa all the credit for the blogheader image on WH. I waited patiently for her to release that design, the tagline credit goes to Stevie Nicks. :) Thanks for joining in on the meme!

Oh yes, so it is. I didn’t realise that Lisa had made that! Well, we have to give the credit to somebody else - her head’s already big enough! ;)

It was a pleasure by the way! :)

Not so big - I still fit through the bathroom door thankyouverymuch :p

I did not know that you are a musician - there’s some thing we have in common. I will be checking out your White Roots site soon!

But first! Oh FIRST I shall be checking out Hotel Chocolat! Chris spoils me by bringing chocolate over from Europe when he travels - - which beats the pathetic chocolate I grew up on (and USED to love!). Americans just don’t do chocolate right.

Hotel Chocolat is amazing! Not only does their chocolate taste amazing, but they have an incredible range of stuff - and they’re always introducing new things! Even the packaging is beautifully designed… :)

You’re right - America doesn’t understand good chocolate. In fact, I may even go so far as to say that US chocolate actually tastes worse than British!

Now, see - - tell me I have an immature chocolate palette, but I love the chocolate Chris has brought home from the UK. His mother once sent a box full of chocolate goodies and I swore off Hersheys and Nestle ever since - I can’t even eat the stuff anymore!

Do you have a favorite at Hotel Chocolat? I’m browsing their site right now thinking I need to make an order - - and hoping they ship to the US!

I think (for me anyway) it’s to do with the amount of sugar in chocolate. One end of the scale has American manufacturers putting in the most sugar and fat, then England, then the rest of Europe (Belgium, for example, makes some nice chocolate). Then right at the other end of the scale are the guys behind Hotel Chocolat! Have you noticed that they actually sell a 100% cocoa bar?!?

I’m a big fan of The Purist range, but their mixed boxes are nice too, and their dipped fruit, and… Actually, I don’t think I’ve every had *anything* from them that wasn’t good - although you could say that I’ve only just dipped my toe in the chocolate fondue. ;)

They ship to the US - but there’s a whopping fifteen quid surcharge!

Every *once* in a while - I find something that may just be worth a 15 quid shipping charge. When you live in an area where your best bet is Hershey’s . . . 15 quid doesn’t look so bad. Especially now that I’ve been browsing their site — I have a craving now that just won’t end.

I’m blaming this on you, Paul. :)

You’re gonna hate me for this… I’ve got almost a full box of their chocolates sitting on top of my freezer. I’d forgotten they were there to be honest, but the thought of them popped back into my head following this little discourse! Think I’m gonna munch a couple and then call it a night (well, and early morning)! ;)

    You’re right - I hate you for that :)

My only solace is knowing that I have a substantial order on its way..I’m hoping it doesn’t take *too* long :)

I’m with you on #6 - once I got a taste of a dark chocolate, I can’t eat any more milk chocolate. I tried once a 100% cocoa bar, but didn’t really like it that much. 70% is good enough for me :-)

Do you have a mini-recording studio at home? Do you miss performing? My husband is a retired musician. He’s not performing anymore, but still composing and working on musical arrangements at his home recording studio.

I’ve always been mostly digital when it comes to making music. My setup is 85% software, with the rest being MIDI hardware.

Having said that, I can play pretty much every instrument (except the sax, which I sadly never got around to learning) - and I have also played in a couple of bands, so it’s not like I can’t do the ‘traditional’ thing! ;)

I don’t miss performing - I found that nerve-wracking to the nth degree… But I do miss the composition and production process, yes. :)

We are pleased to inform you that your order number - 6649939 was
despatched on 18/06/2007 by Royal Mail World to MS LISA SABIN.

    Oh the anticipation!

What you need to be do is start praying, that neither the Royal Mail nor whoever they palm the delivery off onto screws it up and melts the lot on the way to your front door. ;)

Thanks (I think) for the tag, Paul.

I love good chocolate too. I’m talking the 85% kind.

    Ciao for now.

So…I received my HotelChocolat delivery today. I think you won’t be hearing from me for the next several days…you know how that happens when you find a new love.

    Just WOW!

    Welcome to the Hotel… ;)

I’m rather impressed by the shipping - 4 days from the UK to the US is practically unheard of these days, unless you pay for FedEx or UPS premiums of a hundred dollars and up!

Doesn’t it all just look stunning though? Even their end of line clearance packages come beautifully presented!

Congrats, Lisa. That was quick indeed.

Did you know that there’s a French woman (don’t remember her name, I’ve seen her on TV) who makes a living by tasting chocolates and writing about them? She travels all over the world, all famous chocolate factories are inviting her to taste and critic their chocolate. Doesn’t it sound like a dream job to have? :-)
