Upgrading to 2.2
No proper post today, as I’m going to be tearing my hair out upgrading to WordPress 2.2 for the next eight hours… Well probably - the truth is that I’m not really sure how hard it’s going to be, so if I get it done in less than 3 hours then I’ll write something more interesting than this!
Anyone else upgrading today? Am I the only person who’s template includes PHP modifications, or is anyone else sweating it too?
I was seriously toying with the idea of moving to ExpressionEngine, given how flexible it seems in comparison to WP. I mean, people like Veerle make it look incredible - although I suspect that’s due to Veerle’s design skills and not the blogging platform she’s chosen! But then I found out yesterday that one of my favourite blog designs is actually based on WP, and not on EE as I had thought! Maybe I’ll stick with the boys from the Press for a little longer!
By the way, if you visit this domain tomorrow and get a 404, then it’s quite likely that I’ve screwed it right up - just so you know! If you want something to read while you’re waiting for me to fix it, then you could check out this very, very, very, very long post by Miss Lisa… ![]()

I’ve just done the dreaded upgrade. Took over two hours and wasn’t made any easier by my server deciding to have a bit of downtime during the process.
Not noticing much difference for my efforts although I’m going to play around with widgets and get them put into my downloadable theme.
It sure is WordPress, although I’ve heard good things about ExpressionEngine, we just couldn’t go past the WordPress price … free!
Anyhow thanks for the kind comments on the blog design!
Are you saying that I was a tad bit too long-winded? Heh - thanks for the mention, at any rate
How’d the upgrade go?
“Anyone else upgrading today?”
Waiting to hea how you get on first
Good luck
Aaron: Glad it went well for you!
Collis: Yeah - it’s the EE price tag that’s put me off so far too! Of course, if anyone from EE is reading this - and wants to give me a free copy - then I’ll become your greatest evangelist to date!
Lisa: Long-winded? No. Blatent self-promotion on the back of major news? Probably. An entertaining and interesting read? Most certainly.
Tara: Chicken.

I haven’t actually done it yet by the way. I’ve spent the last ten hours trying to get the Britster server to run PHP 4 and 5 at the same!
Little bit later…
Well good luck and hope it goes well !
Thanks mate!
Blatant self-promotion I shall admit to - - at least it was a related topic! :p
btw - EE is a great program… still doesn’t beat WordPress… for price, or for extensibility.
I ran my upgrade this morning without a hitch. In fact it wasn’t just an upgrade, I made a backup of the front-end and DB, then deleted the front-end entirely. I built up my install from scratch, carefully only uploading the plugins and theme I use, then hacking the code of K2’s comments to work with Gravatar2. I haven’t hacked my routine code change into the Akismet plugin yet because I’d rather leave it vanilla and it’s only a cosmetic issue to the spam list.
The end result? Everything now works faster and *works*. I’ve been having problems for a while now with the K2 and Bad Behaviour - certain combinations of settings would completely break the site.
Now I just need something else to fix…
Glad it went well for you! Your setup sounds like mine - hacked to bits!
