sketches from my past

I was clearing out one of my storage cupboards yesterday, and sorting through some boxes that haven’t been touched for years - when I came across a couple of my old sketchbooks.

During my time studying art at school, and later while at college, I was rarely seen without a pencil and pad in hand. I literally produced hundreds of sketchbooks, full of everything from quick scribbles to detailed studies.

Unfortunately, the passage of time and occasional relocations have not been kind to my collection, and sadly much of it has now been lost. My first ever proper sketchbook surfaced a couple of years ago, but that too now seems to have vanished.

So I thought it might be nice to post some old sketches online, from the pages of those books that have survived the passage of time. I have been encouraged to do this by the recent spate of posts where other designers (David Airey for example) have posted some of their recent drawings. It has also really got me in the right frame of mind for Tara’s impending experiment! Please remember that these were done a long, long time ago - and I lacked the technique that came from years of practice…

1992 - Warrior of Chaos

Drawn in 1992, and heavily influenced by art from the Fighting Fantasy books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. Click the image to view it in Flickr.

1993 - Greylocks

Drawn in 1993, and again influenced by Fighting Fantasy art. Click the image to view it in Flickr.

2001 - Lauren at 6 Months

Drawn in 2001, a picture of my first daughter at 6 months. I just couldn’t get that left eye looking right - something that often happens to me when I draw loved ones! Click the image to view it in Flickr.

    Hi Paul,

Its cool to see these maybe you should start a “dig out your old sketches” theme. I have a constant embarrassing reminder when I go round my mums of my old work, she has some watercolours on the wall from when I was in my teens :(
    PS. thanks for the mention.

It could be worse… She could have pictures of you as a baby, lying naked on a rug. Not that I’ve been *there* at all. Really. ;)

I’m with Tara, it’s nice to see your sketchwork Paul. Thanks. Her idea for a meme is interesting too.

    Cheers for the link. :)

Now I’m off out for a boogie.

    LOL! A boogie? :)

Oh wait - I remember that… Clubbing, right? Haven’t done that since two weeks before my eldest was born! Mind you, I suppose I get to ‘boogie’ when I’m DJing… ;)

Yeah, this meme could be interesting - when I see your sketches my guess is that I’m about ten years older than you. I’m 42 - and you?

I’m always amazed at what people can draw because I can’t, AT ALL. My husband can draw/build/paint/create practically anything, so he aggravates me a lot. :D

Yeah, I’m like that with my wife. She lacks the visualisation skills that I have, so I’ll suggest things like redecorating the lounge in creamy white and burgundy, and she can’t see that in her mind - often resulting in me having to sketch something out, or at least hold up colour swatches in place!

I’d really like to make more time for real art - sketching, pen and ink drawing, watercolour painting, that kind of thing. I spend most of my design time working on a PC these days - and I’m worried that I’ll forget how to do it if I don’t keep on practising!
